Choosing a photographer

When you are entrusting someone with the task of making a treasured record of your wedding day how do you go about selecting a photographer in whom you can feel totally confident?

Here are some useful pointers:

  • Do you find the photographer friendly, receptive to your ideas and forthcoming with good suggestions? Does he/she take the kind of pictures you like; are the weddings recent and do the people in the photos look happy and natural? Are you happy to have that person sharing your big day and mingling with your guests?

  • Is the photographer a member of a professional body such as the British Institute of Professional Photography or the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers? Do you feel that he/she fully understands your brief and has the professional authority to direct the photography on the day, organise the guests with tact and not keep them waiting around for too long?

  • Will the person you're talking to be the one taking the pictures on the day? If you are booking via a company representing photographers make sure you meet and see the work of the person who will be there.

  • Do you know for certain what will be included in the price, or could there be hidden extras? Will the photographer let you have copies of the images on a CD or a website to show your family and friends? Can he/she show you a selection of attractive albums, or is there just a standard package?
